Genesis 5:1-32

So, this reflection will be brief. But no less full.

Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.

Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.

Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.

Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.

Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.

Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.

Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.

Lamech [Noah’s father] lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.

Genesis Five lists the generations from Adam to Noah. Mostly “boring stuff,” until Enoch. Enoch is the only one listed who is credited with anything except living and dying. In fact, he is remembered here for walking faithfully with God.

I wonder why the others aren’t. I wonder how he lived differently than the eight generations who simply “lived…and then died.” And I wonder what would be said of me, if I were in such a list.
